Smarter audits: how STEP is making CPD compliance simpler for members

At STEP, we know audits are an essential part of ensuring compliance, maintaining high standards and building trust. But let’s be honest – traditional audit processes weren’t always the easiest for members. Relying on manual forms, fragmented systems and time-consuming processes could make Continuing Professional Development (CPD) compliance feel like a chore.

That’s why we’ve embraced digital solutions to make things simpler, faster and more accessible. From our new, easy-to-use online CPD forms to AI-powered insights through thematic reviews, we’re making compliance simpler, more transparent and less time-consuming for members.

Online forms: a simpler way to submit CPD records

One of the biggest improvements in the CPD audit process is the shift to online submission forms. These forms replace the previous manual process, making it easier for members to record, update and submit CPD records throughout the year.

Here’s what’s new:

  • One simple form: instead of juggling multiple forms, members now have a single, streamlined online form to record all their CPD activities in one place.
  • Update as you go: members can revisit and edit their CPD records throughout the audit year, ensuring accuracy before submission.
  • No more guesswork: the form includes hints, guidance and examples to help members confidently complete their submissions.
  • Easier document uploads: members can now attach their CPD evidence without limits on the number of attachments and a generous file size allowance.

By moving to digital-first forms, we’re reducing administrative burdens for members, making the audit process more efficient and accessible.

AI-powered thematic reviews: smarter insights, better processes

STEP isn’t just making CPD submissions easier. We’re also using AI to enhance thematic reviews, ensuring audits provide meaningful insights that help shape better processes and future improvements.

Thematic reviews take a bigger-picture approach, identifying trends across CPD submissions. By applying AI, we can:

  • Identify common challenges: AI helps us spot recurring patterns in CPD submissions, such as areas where members struggle to meet requirements.
  • Improve member support: by understanding trends, we can refine guidance and resources, making it easier for members to stay compliant.
  • Inform future audit cycles: insights from thematic reviews help evolve the CPD audit framework, ensuring it remains relevant to members’ needs.

These improvements mean that audits are no longer just about reviewing records; they’re about using data to inform smarter, more effective professional development.

Next steps

The latest development is already under way. A new online form is being put through its paces ahead of a planned release for the 2025 CPD Audit.

We will use AI to review the 2024 CPD Audit to gain insights that will help us to modernise professional compliance. With a focus on accessibility, efficiency and continuous improvement, we’re ensuring that audits work for our members.

The future of audits isn’t just about ticking boxes. It’s about using technology to create systems that are efficient, proactive and member-friendly.
